TweetYo Russel! Thanks for the plug. I know I've talked with you a few times upon your visits to 99 Bottles. Here's more info about 99 Bottles and Quilter's Irish Death...
About the beer...
Quilter's Irish Death was created by the brewery's founder, Jim Quilter. The brewery calls the beer a dark, smooth, ale. But I believe BeerAdvocate and RateBeer call it a Sweet Stout. As the beer isn't pasteurized and you both mention, 'barf, earthiness' on the aroma, I believe it may have experienced some radical temperature changes during transport back to Hawaii. Normally I hear from locals that the aroma is "malty, hints of chocolate." Quilter's Irish Death was the #1 Selling Beer at 99 Bottles in 2009. We say of its flavor, "Light bodied and sweet. Notes of brown sugar, chocolate, and caramel, with hints of fruit." The beer comes in at 7.8% ABV. The brewery, Iron Horse, is located in central Washington in a town called Ellensburg (major draws of the town: farming/beef industry, college, rodeo). The brewery lovingly refers to Quilter's Irish Death as "beer candy" and "a tempting session beer" -- similar to what I hear in Bully's review.
About 99 Bottles
It's owned by a husband-wife team and has one part-time employee. Husband's favorite beers are stouts & sours, wife's are Wild Ales, Old Ales & Scottish, employee's are IPAs (he's a total hop-head)...hence we all have quite the mix in opinion on "best beer!" The store's been open for 3 years now and we are busy maintaining an in-stock quantity of 1,000 beers from around the world. We also largely focus on carrying as many Washington state microbrews as possible; typically you'll find at least 20 local breweries represented (unfortunately not all offer bottles). There's also hard ciders & mead and a couple of gluten-free beers for those who aren't fans of the barley. More info at www.99bottles.net
See you on your next trip to Washington!
